RFID technology, and its advantages for the fashion industry, has been the subject of discussion for many years. Despite the fact that several large players have commenced implementation, the industry continues to have a wait-and-see attitude. Nedap Retail has seen an increasing concrete interest from fashion retailers in RFID barcodes, however.
With the help of RFID barcodes, the retailer can identify around 12,000 articles per hour, enabling rapid and accurate stocktaking of which articles are located in the shop. This is approximately 20 times as fast as a normal barcode, which allows identification of 600 articles per hour. Dozens of fashion retailers are currently exploring, in concrete terms, the possibilities of the RFID barcode.
Rob Schuurman, General Manager Nedap Retail: “These are projects at both small and large fashion retailers, in other words at fashion retailers with 1–10 shops up to 2000 branches The retail sector is seeing a change in consumer behaviour - people no longer wait for articles or return to the shop. Identification quickly makes it possible for errors in the inventory to be discovered and missing products to be restocked. The purpose of this is to ensure a higher availability of articles to the customer, without increasing inventory costs or shrinkage. RFID Technology can provide this without requiring extra time from employees."
Alongside identification, another reason for the increasing interest is that RFID barcodes are easy to implement in every retail environment, without a great deal of effort on the part of the retailer. Nedap Retail has developed RFID barcodes and shop readers under the name Store !D.
