Case Induction Lighting

San Diego chooses Induction Lighting

San Diego chooses Induction Lighting: more than $2 Million annual savings.

San Diego (California) announced a citywide project to upgrade 80% of the city’s streetlights to energy-efficient fixtures.

The city chose QL induction lighting over LED lamps because a 20-year life-cycle study showed broad band induction lights saved more energy, were less expensive and provided better light.

“This is great for San Diego from every perspective,” according to mayor Jerry Sanders. “The city will save $2.2 million annually from reduced energy and maintenance costs, and the higher-quality light will make our neighborhoods safer.”

The project will provide upgraded street lights with better illumination with no additional cost to City taxpayers. Funding is provided by a federal stimulus grant, and a low interest bond and loan. The energy savings exceed the financing debt service, thereby "paying" for the upgrade.

More than 35.000 induction technology street light fixtures will replace the old sodium vapor lamps. The retrofit project started in September and will be completed early 2013.

BEFORE: Current high-pressure sodium vapor lamps cast yellow glow.

The project will reduce electricity consumption by 16 million kilowatt-hours annually, yielding a corresponding carbon-emission reduction of more than 12.000 tons a year.

Today the QL induction lighting brand is owned by QL Company B.V. The electronic control gear of the QL system has been developed and is produced by Nedap N.V.

AFTER: New induction lamps provide better color rendering.
