As a result of the growing global population and increasing prosperity, the global demand for meat and dairy products is on the increase. The OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) expects that the demand for meat around the world will grow by 19% by 2020.
This will put major pressure on scarce resources, such as feed, water and energy. Only by switching to sustainable, more efficient production techniques will it be possible to continue to meet the growing demand in the future.
Better life, higher productivity
There are around 1.5 billion cows and 1 billion pigs on cattle farms around the world. Nedap Agri develops sustainable automation systems for large cattle farming businesses, which make life considerably more pleasant for these animals. Furthermore, these systems handle feed and energy much more efficiently, and they increase the productivity of the business.
Fewer pigs but the same level of production
Productivity in cattle farming differs greatly from country to country. In China, for example, the largest pig producer in the world, sows have 13 piglets each per year, on average. On professional Dutch pig farms, sows have an average of 26 piglets each per year. If the automation systems of Nedap Agri were to be implemented throughout the world, we would need 40% fewer pigs for the same meat production. This would mean a huge difference in the amount of food, water and energy.
There is also still a great deal of progress to be made in milk production
Milk production is set to increase considerably in the coming years. By 0.7% in the industrialised countries, and by 2.5% in developing countries. Growth is primarily visible in South Asia, Southeast Asia, China and South America. There is still a great deal of progress to be made in the area of efficiency. For example, a Dutch cow produces 10 times as much milk, on average, as cows in developing countries.
Generating renewable energy yourself
With the PowerRouter from Nedap Energy Systems, every farm can set up its own renewable power station. You connect a wind turbine or a number of solar panels to it, and you can terminate your contract with the electricity grid. The PowerRouter is also extremely suitable for countries where there is no grid, or the grid is unreliable.
