Backend Developer (Java/Kotlin)

Groenlo, Netherlands
32 - 38 hrs
€ 4.000 - € 5.000

What are you going to do?

Ready to work on software that operates at serious scale and directly impacts how global retailers run their stores every day? At Nedap Retail, we build backend systems that make life easier for thousands of store employees worldwide—and we’re looking for a Backend Developer (Java/Kotlin) to help us push this even further.

At Nedap Retail, you’ll work with international brands such as Hugo Boss, lululemon, and Under Armour on a platform that provides retailers with real-time visibility into their inventory. Millions of items are continuously scanned and processed, resulting in billions of database operations each year. All core processes — from receiving and counting stock to moving and selling products — run through our backend systems. That’s why we build fast, scalable, and reliable systems. If you enjoy solving complex problems and working on high-throughput systems with a strong focus on performance, data consistency, and resilience, this role will feel right at home for you.

As a Backend Developer (Java/Kotlin), you’ll play a key role in building and evolving the core platforms behind our products. From day one, you’ll work on meaningful, production-critical systems, designing and implementing robust backend architectures, developing APIs and services, and improving existing platforms that operate at scale.

Your responsibilities

Design, build, and maintain backend services in a complex software landscape. Take ownership of core components and ensure they are scalable, reliable, and maintainable.

Contribute to architectural decisions around service design, APIs, data stores, and messaging. Help shape the long-term technical direction and apply modern technologies pragmatically.

Ensure high code quality and system reliability through testing, monitoring, and performance optimization. Proactively identify technical debt and drive improvements across services and platforms.

Work closely with frontend, mobile, product, and infrastructure teams. Align on requirements, clarify technical implications, and ensure smooth integration across the organization.

Your team

As a Backend Developer(Java/Kotlin) you’ll join the Nedap Retail Services team: an enthusiastic group of colleagues with diverse development backgrounds, ranging from frontend to mobile and backend development. You’ll collaborate closely with other engineers, product teams, and domain experts to deliver solutions that are not only technically sound, but also provide real value to our customers.

We value self-reliance and personal responsibility. You’re encouraged to actively seek out knowledge and solutions. Our culture is open, informal, and social, united by a shared passion for building user-friendly, high-quality technical solutions that our customers enjoy using every day.
